Vacations Relieve Stress

 

Stress is a true physiological response which was originally 

meant to support us and to keep us safe. 

It releases hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine for 

the fighting or flight response that early man needed. 

But persistent stress can be harmful 

to our bodies in modern society, chronic stress can be destructive to our bodies. Getting away for regular vacations and leaving our every day stresses give us a break from the constant high levels of these hormones and a chance to repair some of the damage.

Vacations Help Maintain Focus

Studies find that chronic stress can affect the part of the brain that inhibits goal-driven activities and causes memory problems. Continuous work without breaks or holidays can cause people to feel frustrated and overwhelmed, and have concentration issues. Surveys show nearly three-quarters of people who are often on vacation feeling energized and better equipped to take on the tasks at hand.

Neuroscientists have found that chronic exposure to stress hormones can actually alter the brain structure which contributes to depression and anxiety. Evidence reveals that women who do not take daily holidays were three times more vulnerable to depression and anxiety. This corroborates a survey that found people who spend regular holidays feeling extremely happy with an overall feeling of well-being compared to those who did not spend the holidays. And many reported these effects to last past their actual holidays.
